PAPI News! – January 2017

  Posted on   by   No comments

With the beginning of the new year, you will be receiving this newsletter at least 6 times over the year to bring you bullets of info about various painting events the PAPI group is involved in or other interesting Plein air events around our locale. I (Bonnie Griffith) will publish this near the being of the months of January, March, May, July, September and November. This “blog” or newsletter will be available to anyone who signs up for it through the website and will be archived on the website.

Please note that the organization and leadership of PAPI has changed, being now organized by an advisory board with regional coordinators in the Boise, Twin Falls and Wood River areas. Respectively, these folks are Nadene Kranz, David Swain and Karen Jacobsen. Information regarding events and activities of PAPI will be available on in the Boise area, on the PAPI website, the group page on Facebook (Plein Air Painters of Idaho) and in the newsletter. You can sign up for the newsletter via the website.

Anyone who is a member of Facebook can also ask to be included on the PAPI group page by selecting the “join” button on our Facebook page. Facebook is a great communication tool because anyone who has asked for inclusion in this group is able to post events and items of interest on that page, once you are accepted by the page administrator. This page is not meant for advertising a business, but for sharing activities and events of the organization.

If you want to have something published in the newsletter, please contact me, Bonnie Griffith, with details prior the end of the month before the newsletter is published per the above schedule.(

David Swain from Twin Falls is planning a plein air event there in mid to late June that has the promise of being an event many will want to attend. Details are forthcoming. This event may include an exhibit and workshop opportunity. Stay tuned.

Several members have work showing currently at the Boise State Public Radio, 220 E. Parkcenter Blvd, Boise with the TVAA Plein Air Show. Nearly 40 pieces of work are displayed including work of the Urban Sketchers.

Kevin McCain also has some sketching classes scheduled.  Check out Kevin’s website for details (

A great source of information about plein air painting, artists, and events is the PleinAir magazine. They have a listing of plein air events throughout the country in the January issue. Events are listed by state and there are quite a few that are relatively nearby. It is not a complete listing of every plein air competition, but it is pretty comprehensive.

Some of the 2017 plein air events in or around Idaho are:

Eagle, ID Plein Air hosted by Finer Frames of Eagle – June 8-10
Jackson Hole, WY – June 17
Driggs, ID – July 23-29
Glacier Park MT – Sept 22-29
Roseburg, OR – Sept 13-16
Escalante, UT – Sept 22- Oct 1
(Note: some events require registration and jurying process)

ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP SHOW – INITIAL POINT GALLERY, MERIDIAN, IDPAPI has an invitation to show work the month of October at Initial Point Gallery at Meridian City Hall. Details for this call to artists will be posted on the website and Facebook soon. We need a couple of people who will help coordinate this event. Please contact me (Bonnie Griffith) if you are interested in helping.

With the close of 2016, Dan McAlister retired from the position of President of PAPI. Dan dedicated a great amount of time to the development of the organization during his tenure. Thank you Dan for all you did! It’s with pleasure, that I include his letter to the membership:

Fellow Artists:
This past year we have come a long way together with painting in each of the 3 Regions! We had a great time with an instructor from out of state; Robert Moore’s Class in Declo; Painting in the Snake River Canyon; Painting at the Silver Creek Reserve with the Fishermen; Botanical Garden Show and Paint Out; City of Eagle Paint Out; Painting at the Redfish Lake Lodge, including selling over $5,000 of our Art; and countless hours of “Meet-up” events organized by the Regional Rep’s. This was very much a part of our Monthly activities and included instruction by David Mensing and Silas Thompson in many of the events. Also, we had an Art Show in downtown Boise and concluded in October with an Annual Meeting where we “Brain Stormed” for the upcoming 2017 Year. This was only accomplished by a lot of CARING People who volunteered many, many hours!

The current Board will set the NEW Agenda with ONLY your help and further input! What is next will only be determined by the ideas put forth at the Annual Meeting and the Chairing of the Paint Outs by the Members such as yourself!

Thanks again for your help in making this past Year a Banner Year and you support for making my last year as President a pleasure!

Dan McAlister
